History and Activities

The Fencing Club Rapir was founded in 1992, initiated by the following group of fencing enthusiasts: Branko Pleca (the initial president), the late Branko Dubravica (vice-president), Zeljko Kvesic (secretary), Tea Lanovic (competitor and trainer), and Sanjin Kovacic (secretary of the Zagreb Fencing Federation).

The Club enters the 2006/2007 season with more than 50 members and six active trainers (plus four in reserve).

The Club is active in many sports and sport-promoting programs. It organizes and finances sportsmen at Croatian and international tournaments, helps with the acquisition of fencing equipment, organizes open championship for Cadets (in February), organizes the International Summer Fencing Camp in Jelsa on the island Hvar, and organizes many other activities for its members.

Club Rapir also participates in programs for prevention of youth delinquency, and was one of the organizers of the campaign “Sword in Hand against Drugs.” As children and young generations are exposed to many contemporary temptations (smoking, alcohol, drugs..), different constructive, creative, intellectual, as well as physical and wellness activities are the best prevention. Sport is an ideal preventive tool, as it gives participants a tremendous sense of self-worth and confidence, which has a positive influence on all that children do.

Members of the club can organize a birthday party for children in the fencing club. It is a great opportunity for young sportsmen to impress their friends with their skills and their fancy fencing equipment. Parents should contact the club and reserve the time. They are responsible for food and drinks, as well as for the children’s supervision and after-party cleaning.
